So here's the matter, I found myself lack of defense lately and I would like to deal more damage.
I have 54 defense gear at the moment. Should I upgrade it?
And about weapon, which level weapon should I start to upgrade? Silver or gold?

Judging by your activity in the Wudang forums I am assuming you are a Wudang yes?
If that is the case, do you intend on getting Tai Chi gear of Soft as Yin gear?
If it is the latter then I'd probably recommend against it right now.
Otherwise, you probably won't be able to get gold gear right now since it requires workbenches to craft which are ludicrously expensive.
The equipment crafted with double brocaded cloth and brass ingots are pretty good right now. You can get the majority of the mats yourself and then buy the cloth and ingots with school contribution points which makes it quite easy to craft.
You can also buy all the upgrading materials now with yellow coins and heavy forging stones with school contribution points too.
70 defense silver gear is the best easily obtainable gear right now as all the materials can be farmed easily.
PS: The defense on gear does very little to reduce your external damage taken, I think it was something like 100 defense per 1% damage or something? Regardless, the stats from gear are what you really care about.
