While ArcheAge’s PvP is generally set up as an east vs. west faction battle, it’s really more of a free-for-all instead. Due to player personalities and guild competitions, there are often a lot of intra-continental battles, as well as the normal faction-based ones.

Packs and Stealing
One of the big things that contributes to players killing their own faction is the idea of getting free items. When someone is running a pack, they become a prime target to not only the enemy faction, but their own as well. After all, they are carrying what can be an expensive item, and by stealing it another player they can cash it in for profit. This leads to dangerous trips, as there are plenty of players that would jump on this chance.

Pirates
Technically, pirates are considered as a separate faction from the east and the west. Once a player gets this status, they are no longer associated with either one. With that said, they were at one point on one side or the other, so I would consider them as being part of an intra-continental battle as well. After all, they are killing players that used to be on their team.

Guild Wars

By far the most popular form of intra-continental battle is between enemy guilds. There are tons of things that can spark these, such as:
 Disagreements between leaders
 Problems with specific members (such as stealing or griefing)
 Disliking how a guild is run (such as being a zerg guild)
 Being against where a guild is from
 Wanting the other guild’s land
